Professional Experience
Founder of the Law Offices of Kurt D. Bennett
Associate, Allen, Hansen, and Maybrown
Admitted to Practice: Washington; U.S. District Court, Western District of Washington; U.S. Court of Appeals Ninth Circuit |
Kurt D. Bennett is one of Seattles hardest working young attorneys. After graduating from law school, Kurt joined the renowned law firm of Allen, Hansen, and Maybrown gaining training and experience working alongside some of Seattles best known criminal defense attorneys. In August 2000, Kurt formed his own practice and has been aggressively and successfully representing clients throughout the Puget Sound area ever since.
Kurts experience encompasses a wide range of criminal matters at the state and federal levels including theft, forgery, assault, prostitution, sex offenses, domestic violence, drug offenses, DUI, and murder as well as quasi-criminal matters such as anti-harassment and protection orders.
Kurt has stepped to the forefront as an advocate for people seeking to "clean-up" their criminal records. Kurt has successfully led scores of people through the processes of Pardon Applications, Vacation of Criminal Convictions, Restoration of Firearm Rights, Deletion of Non-Conviction Data, and Sealing of Criminal Records. As a result of Kurt's in-depth knowledge of these convoluted and ever-changing areas of the law, Kurt is frequently asked to speak at Attorney Education CLEs as well as to testify before the judicial committees of the Washington House and Senate.
Kurt is committed to providing quality legal services within a person-to person framework allowing each client to receive individual attention and zealous, competent representation. Through his strong work ethic Kurt has gained a reputation with judges, lawyers, court staff, clients, and juries for being exceptionally thorough and well prepared. In addition, Kurt is known for his excellent communication skills and effective use of trial exhibits.
Kurt is dedicated to obtaining the best legal outcome possible for his clients. Kurt has successfully raised the defenses of prednisone psychosis, unwitting possession, self-defense, duress, defense of property, alibi, diminished capacity and many others, as well as effectively used pre-trial motions to limit the scope and use of damaging evidence. Through his excellent use of creative sentencing, Kurt has assisted clients in obtaining foreign jurisdiction probation, work release, electronic home monitoring, and community service in lieu of jail. In addition, Kurt is not afraid to attack prosecutors operating practices and in the past has uncovered prosecutors hiding evidence, prosecutors having ex-parte communications with the court, and victims advocates having improper contact with victims.
Further, Kurt has developed a quiet reputation for discreetly handling the criminal matters of public figures. Since opening his own firm, Kurt has successfully handled matters for members of the Seattle Mariners, Seattle Supersonics, and Seattle Seahawks organizations, as well as lawyers, judges, and executives of Fortune 500 companies.
Kurt is a graduate of Purdue University, Texas Tech University School of Law, and has an M.B.A. degree from Texas Techs College of Business Administration. Kurt is a member of The National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (NACDL), The Washington Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (WACDL), Washington State Trial Lawyers Association (WSTLA), Innocence Project Northwest (IPNW), and the King County Bar Association. Kurt is also a writer for De Novo, the statewide newspaper for the Washington Young Lawyers Division of the WSBA. Kurts work has also been featured in the Seattle Post Intelligencer for his representation of people caught up in the quagmire of changing laws in the war on drugs.
In his personal life, Kurt is a strong advocate and sponsor for early childhood development and parent education programs. He has served as chairperson for the Burien Co-op Preschool and spokesperson for the Highline Parent Advisory Counsel. His advocacy has resulted in featured articles in King County newspapers.
